2012 Boston Photography Internship at Nicole Chan Photography

SEEKING:  Hard-working individual interested in the wedding photography world.

I promise that this internship will provide you an insight into the mistakes, achievements, challenges and strategies that have molded me into the person/photographer that I am today.   This season I’m offering two unpaid studio management positions.  I think it’s a great way to learn a bit about the nuts and bolts of running a wedding and portrait photography business (and the strategies associated with such).  I will be straightforward, honest and communicative.   I’ve schlepped my fair share of bags and still contribute a good deal of b’tch work in order to learn, absorb and simply breathe the same air of those that I admire.  I am very willing to share all of these experiences with you.   In return, I expect a ton from you.

WHO (qualities of the ideal candidate) / and WHY

  • Ambitious – You’ll be representing me, my company, my brand.  In addition, I invest a great deal of time and effort developing my intern.  Slackers need not apply.
  • Professional, personable and communicative – You will be interacting with my vendors and clients.
  • Lover of dogs – I have a Siberian husky.  35lbs / blue eyes / likes to cuddle with your feet
  • PC and Apple literate
  • Driver’s license required / Car, a plus – You may get the exhilarating opportunity to drive my luxury Honda accord!  Be sure to lock it though… I don’t have powerlocks.  LUXURY, I tell you.
  • Non-picky eater – I’ll feed you!
  • Fast learner (technology-related) – Photography concepts, processes and workflows, etc.

WHAT (things that you may find yourself doing)

  • Photography digital workflow – Lightroom & Photoshop post-processing, graphic design, fulfilling product orders
  • Marketing & Advertising – Publication Submission, web/blog work, mailing list stuff, some really fun 2012 strategies :)
  • Studio Management – Manage client communications & vendor relationships, packaging gifts, data management
  • Occasional Assisting – Set up shooting area, lights and tethering;  Organize and secure gear;  Coordinate with on-site staff and clients

WHERE (home is where the bum rests)

  • My home studio is in Quincy, MA (a 10 min walk from the NQ train station, red line)

WHEN (I’m relatively flexible on this one)

  • Recommended: 8 hours/week at Quincy studio
  • Weekdays only

ENOUGH TALK.  Send me the following:

  • Tell me about yourself.  Be as thorough and creative as you’d like.  Boring descriptions will be omitted.  Tell me about your aspirations, what drives you and what you like to do for fun.
  • Resume & professional background
  • How do you stand out from everyone else?

Please e-mail to nicole@nicolechanphotography.com with the subject line: “2012 Photography Internship – [Insert 3 adjectives that describe you]“

There’s no official start nor end date, but in the past, internships have been 5-8 months.

Katie Barnes - Hi Nicole… found you via FB’s referral group. Love your work… I’ve been looking for a way to display our published weddings. Did you take a screen shot of yours on the Bridal Blog or get a PDF? Looks great…

Sledder - Hi Katie, I took a screenshot! :)

“It was 50% off, so I bought two!” | LeCreuset French Ovens

Christmas came early for my kitchen-fanatic boyfriend.  After making the best slow braised shortribs on the planet, he’s been eyeing these majestic LeCreusets.  After cooking for a handful of friends in Toronto, Jason started searching for deals.  He came back one afternoon, announced they were 50% off and told me he couldn’t decide between the round and the oval, and also the big one or the small one…

Who’s coming over for dinner?

Emily - The yellow looks so pretty! I totally want one but I’m afraid that it would be too heavy for me to rinse afterwards.

Briana Moore - I would come over for dinner, but then it would be too tempting to steal these. They are too cute.

Chinese-American Wedding at the Royal Sonesta in Cambridge

When I first started talking to Monica about her wedding, she laughed about the part in my wedding contract where I require a slice of wedding cake.  Monica mentioned that she wasn’t a huge fan of cake and that I could have her portion.

I was shocked.

WHAT KIND OF A PERSON DOESN’T LIKE CAKE?  Oh boy.  :)

I’ve really enjoyed getting to know Monica and Mike.  After a decade of dating, Mike finally proposed and gifted a beautiful shiny rock to Monica.  I loved everything about their wedding, especially their friends!  They’re a seriously hilarious group of people – especially her bridesmaids (Shoutout to Wendy, Victoria, Susanna and Diane!).  I even ran into a few of my friends at their wedding.

The day started at the Royal Sonesta Hotel for bridal prep and kicked off early with an energetic round of door games.  There were a handful of non-PG-blog appropriate images that I, unfortunately, shouldn’t publish.  For those unfamiliar with Chinese Door Games, it’s a tradition where the groom and his dudes arrive at the home of the parents of the bride.  In this case, it was the bride’s hotel room.  The groom and his groomsmen proceed to undergo a series of tests often administered by the bridesmaids and/or female members.  These are tricks or tasks set on the groom as he attempts to collect the bride from her home on the morning of the wedding.  :)

The day continued with a tea ceremony, an American ceremony, and then lots of fantastic food  as well as a kickass Lion Dance over at China Pearl of Quincy, MA.

Clearly not enough cash for these girls.

Level 1 of Door games accomplished.  Level 2 is a tad too risque, so we’ll keep those off the public internet for a while.  :)

The Chinese wedding tradition of the red umbrella is held by a female elder called the “good luck woman”.  The tradition literally translates to “raise the bark, spread the leaves”.  The red umbrella protects the bride from evil spirit, and the rice and beans thrown towards the bride are to attract the attention of the gold chicken.

The Chinese tea ceremony is performed to express respect and appreciation to the couple’s family.  In the olden days, it was a way to introduce the newly wed to the extended family.  After the bride and groom serve tea to their families, the family members often provide red envelopes filled with money and give gifts, usually gold pieces of jewelry.

So much goes into the tea ceremony!  The order in which tea is served to relatives, whether the bride and groom kneel or stand, the type of tea, the way each member of the family is addressed, etc.

After the Chinese tea ceremony, Monica changes into a STUNNING white bridal gown.  She actually had it tailored to be a sweetheart neckline, and it looks ridiculously perfect on her.

During portraits, I turned around… and saw a ton of handsome dudes with spiffy cameras.  Life is pretty sweet.

Monica had a custom banner made and even DIY-ed some wicked cute props.  More to come below.

Richard over at Cedar Grove Gardens outdid himself in the floral designs!

After the ceremony and portraits at the Sonesta, we headed to Quincy, MA (where I grew up!) to China Pearl (in Kam Man Plaza) for their 350+ person reception.  The night kicked off with a kickass lion dance.I’m a huge fan of off-camera flash and it’s dramatic lighting effects.

The couple in the bottom left caught the bouquet and garter.  HOW CUTE ARE THEY?  I have no idea who they are, but if anyone knows them… tell them I think they’re adorable together.

I love Monica’s brother and all his dance moves.

Don’t be fooled.  This guy singing can sing in CANTONESE!  I’ve never seen him before, but I’ve heard of “this black guy that sings in perfect Chinese”.  Upon passing him later that night, I saw that he was READING Chinese.  Holy crap.

I love this shot.  :)  Congratulations, Monica and Mike!
